Who are we
HALIFAX BLACK FILM FESTIVAL
Presented by TD in collaboration with Global News, the Halifax Black Film Festival (HBFF) celebrates African Heritage Month by bringing powerful Black stories, filmmakers and audiences together through the art of cinema.
Rooted in Nova Scotia, home to some of Canada’s oldest Black communities, HBFF celebrates the province’s rich African Nova Scotian heritage while connecting local audiences with Black stories from across Canada and around the world. The Festival provides an important platform for local emerging and established filmmakers, with a commitment to supporting the growth of the region’s film industry.
Through compelling films, conversations and community engagement, HBFF creates opportunities for people of all backgrounds to connect, discover new perspectives and better understand one another. The Festival celebrates the diversity of Black experiences while recognizing the shared humanity that brings communities together.
Created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation (FCF), the Halifax Black Film Festival is part of a growing national network of Black film festivals, including the Montreal and Vancouver International Black Film Festivals and the Ottawa, Calgary, and Vancouver Black Film festival. As part of the largest Black Cultural organization , HBFF reflects Halifax’s unique cultural history and the important contributions of African Nova Scotians, while creating opportunities for local filmmakers, audiences and communities to participate in a larger national and international conversation through film.
